Dichotos - Historic Yellow and Red Geometric Abstract Oil Painting

$ 10,800
  • Description
    Martin Canin's Dichotos is a large 60 x 50 geometric abstract oil painting, dating 1967. Martin Canin’s work can be linked to two 1960s movements: Color field and Op Art. Like many artists of the period, Canin focuses on the effect of large fields of color interacting on the canvas and the effect of the color combinations on the viewer.
    In this piece Canin combines a minimalistic geometrical composition with the optical effects of color juxtaposition. Vivid yellow, orange and red stripes are carefully alternated to create the optical illusion of a vibrating and moving surface. The triangular shape enhances the dynamism of the composition, also increased by the powerful contrast with the large white background of the canvas.

    Canin states, "My work has gone through many changes in the more than forty years that I have been painting. Manet’s statement still resonates for me: To be concise in art is both necessary and elegant. Luminosity is still the goal, oil paint on canvas still the preferred medium, shape and color still the plastic means to speak my particular expression."

    Born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1927, Martin Canin is firmly rooted in the New York School of Abstract Expressionism. He received his major art training at Syracuse University, where he was awarded the B.F.A. in 1951. In 1959 he went to Tokyo, Japan, where he had his first one-man show in 1960. At the end of the 60s he started teaching at the Parsons School of Design.

    His work is part of the Tate Gallery and the Yale University Art Gallery's permanent collection, and it has been exhibited in Europe, Japan and the United States, including several one-man shows at the historic Graham Gallery at 1014 Madison Avenue, NY.
