Description
This work by Martin Canin is a 79 x 51 triangular oil painting from ca. 1970s. Color is freed from objective context and becomes the subject in itself. This piece is unique in its triangular shape. The intense blue color field expresses a tension underlined by the red, purple and green color stripes that define the limits.
Canin states, "My work has gone through many changes in the more than forty years that I have been painting. Manet’s statement still resonates for me: To be concise in art is both necessary and elegant. Luminosity is still the goal, oil paint on canvas still the preferred medium, shape and color still the plastic means to speak my particular expression."
Born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1927, Martin Canin is firmly rooted in the New York School of Abstract Expressionism. He received his major art training at Syracuse University, where he was awarded the B.F.A. in 1951. In 1959 he went to Tokyo, Japan, where he had his first one-man show in 1960. At the end of the 60s he started teaching at the Parsons School of Design.
His work is part of the Tate Gallery and the Yale University Art Gallery's permanent collection, and it has been exhibited in Europe, Japan and the United States, including several one-man shows at the historic Graham Gallery at 1014 Madison Avenue, NY.
