Émile MARZÉ (1930 - 2009) was born in Menton on August 4, 1930 to an Italian mother and French father. At a very young age he began painting, exhibiting his first work at the age of 14. The meeting with the painters Robert and Renée MAUCHANT, in 1951, allowed him a first knowledge of contemporary art. During this period he made numerous trips to Italy and Spain, discovering the great figures of the Italian Renaissance, whose work he would deepen by residing for long periods in Tuscany, especially in Florence. In 1957 he was awarded the BECKMANN Prize and stayed for a certain period in Upper Bavaria, in the Murnau region and in Munich where he discovered the painting of the German expressionists, in particular of BECKMANN and NOLDE who would influence his painting of that period. Later he created the scenography for some theatrical works for the Coliseum in Barcelona. In 1961 he graduated from the Paris Biennale. From 1956 to 1977 he actively participated in the works of the Menton Biennial, an event which, under his direction, would assume an international importance, with the participation of the greatest artists of the moment. He continues his work as a painter incessantly, exhibiting in the most important European and non-European galleries, enjoying considerable interest from the most qualified critics.
