Description
Antique Swiss Orientalist oil painting of a mosque by the coast by Prevost
Swiss, 1856
Canvas: Height 38cm, width 47cm
Frame: Height 55cm, width 65cm, depth 7cm
Painted by Nicolas Louis André Prevost (Swiss, 1817–1864), this beautiful Orientalist oil work captures a peaceful coastal landscape illuminated by the golden light of dusk. In the distance, a line of domed mosques and slender palms curves along the shoreline, while small sailing boats drift on tranquil waters beneath soft lilac hills.
Prevost, trained in Switzerland and active through the mid-19th century, was admired for his atmospheric depictions of distant lands, blending Romantic naturalism with architectural precision. His paintings display a rare sensitivity to tone and composition, inviting contemplation rather than spectacle. This work exemplifies his mature style—subtle, balanced, and suffused with warmth.
The work is executed in oil on canvas, , and signed ‘Prevost 1856’ in the lower right. It is set within a gilt and ebonised wood frame enriched with classical detailing, successfully preserving its original period presentation.
The painting’s refined brushwork, luminous palette, and poetic subject make it a distinguished addition to any collection, enriching it with an outstanding example of early Orientalist art.
