Description
Ola Arrolladora (translated as “sweeping wave”) is a monumental oil painting on canvas measuring 8 x 12 feet recently exhibited at Art on Paper 2024 New York City. Sanchez captures the sweeping motion of a traditional Mexican ballet folklórico dancer mid-performance, her form twisting and unfurling like a wave caught in motion. The dancer’s direct gaze anchors the composition, framed by raised arms and an explosion of fabric—a dress designed to evoke the colors of a sunset. Vibrant ribbons of yellow, red, orange, and pink cascade through the predominantly blue garment, edged with delicate white lace.
This work continues Sanchez’s deep exploration of familial and cultural themes, woven together through his signature mastery of oil painting. Inspired by his late mother’s work as a seamstress, Ola Arrolladora echoes the vivid memories of his childhood—late nights spent watching her sew quinceañera and folklórico dresses, the rhythmic selection of colors, and the intimate act of creation. Ola Arrolladora is more than just a depiction of dance; the movement in the painting mirrors the swirl of fabric and ribbon in his mother’s basement workspace, where colors intertwined, honoring both Sanchez’s family history and Mexican cultural heritage. -
