  • Description
Philippe Charles Jacquet draws his landscapes from the recesses of his imagination and his memories. The technique brings a verisimilitude which offers to the spectator a whole universe regulated by a
harmony of colors and forms. Oscillating between a hyperrealism and an imaginary treatment of these places straight out of tales, this artistic universe is ordered by the proportions that regulate these
moments of life captured and put in image.

As the water flows, the story takes shape. Formulation of the reference for the spectator’s eye who
melts in the contemplation of these paintings, the boats let imagine a whole history. Sometimes discreet, sometimes the main subject, the boats suggest evasion. At any moment escaping is an option, no need to stay on the water. The theme of the journey is determining for these works and inscribes the characters who populate these paintings in a permanent movement. It is as if the boats allowed them to pass from one universe to another, from reality to dream.

Often leading to houses where the presence of a light indicates that they are inhabited, the moments of life represented by Philippe Charles Jacquet are always anchored in a poetic narrativity. Something is happening, it is not just a matter of representing stretches of water that stretch as far as the eye can see, but of showing how man manages to find something comforting in them. In this way, the characters are caught in their stroll, their intimacy, or busy with their activities.

The verticality of these Breton houses breaks with the horizontality induced by the expanses of calm waters that border them. These houses, spaces of a sleeping humanity, remind us of the eternal harmony between man and nature. They melt into the landscape, sometimes clinging to a rock lost in the middle of the waves or perched on stilts. These houses sometimes seem to float above the water, like a mirage.

The water omnipresence marks Philippe Charles Jacquet’s very personal attachment to the seashore and the stretches of water along the Rance where he spends time. These bodies of water stretch as far as the eye can see, and the horizon is erected as a meeting place between the sky and earth. This expanse that separates the paintings in two, orders the composition of these universes, both earthy and aquatic. This space of the in-between inaugurates compositions where immanence and transcendence meet.

The water, in which are reflected magnificently treated skies, sometimes leads to confusion as the
treatment of the matter seems sometimes to prolong the landscapes beyond the line of division between water, ground and sky. It is then a whole poetry of the reflections which is set up and which increases the reality of another dimension. Much more detailed than they are in the real world, the symmetry is almost perfect, and even questions the point it reflects. In these reflections, a whole parallel world of lighter shades emerges, reflecting what Philippe Charles Jacquet felt right to paint. A veil is laid down, and the sense of reading is thus imposed by itself. It is now up to the spectator to choose which world he will enter, that of reality or of a reverie veiled by a thin layer of glaze.
