A Place Found

Description
"A Place Found" in the "Lay of the Land" collection is inspired by the meeting place of land and sea where earth and water merge; the fleeting moment between time and space where one gives way to the other. It is an original encaustic painting by San Diego artist Shima Shanti. Layers of purified beeswax mixed with all-natural earth pigments and a fir-tree sap called damar are painted on Russian Baltic birch panel then fused with the flame of a torch. Shima's minimal aesthetic and choice of all-natural earth elements creates patina and texture that is storied, translucent, and luminous. In this simplicity unexpected levels of complexity surface.
