"Side by Side" in the collection "Lay of the "Land" is an original encaustic painting by San Diego Artist Shima Shanti derived from her own observation and imagination. Layers of purified beeswax mixed with all-natural earth pigments and a fir-tree sap called damar resin are painted on Russian Baltic birch panel then fused with the flame of a torch. "Side by Side" points to the meeting place of land, and sea. Earth and water merge in a fleeting moment between time and space where one gives way to the other. Beeswax is nature's best preservative; impervious to moisture, decay and uv light. Her choice of all-natural elements in this complex and labor-intensive process is a quiet whisper to the authenticity and integrity of her work. Her earth-tone palette is neutral, deep, and rich. I this simplicity, unexpected levels of complexity surface.
