Zero Mostel Heads Circa 1955

Description
This stunning gouache and ink drawing was realized by the celebrated actor, comedian and artist Samuel Joel "Zero" Mostel (February 28, 1915 – September 8, 1977), circa 1955. The piece offers a collection of stylized heads- that are rendered in whimsical yet sophisticated style- in black ink and white gouache against a tan background. While the work is figurative, Mostel's loose strokes verge on the abstract. Its monochromatic palate and dynamic modernist composition make this work as versatile as it is aesthetically compelling, blending perfectly with any style of interior from classic Mid Century Modern to contemporary. The piece is signed "Mostel" in the lower right corner of the work, and is in excellent vintage condition. The piece comes presented in a custom gilded gallery frame.
In addition to his work as a fine artist, Mostel is best known for his portrayal of comic characters such as Max Bialystock in the film version of Mel Brooks' The Producers (1967), Tevye on stage in "Fiddler on the Roof", and Pseudolus on screen (and stage) in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum".
