The Chrysler Building: A Reflection
-
Description
Mitchell Funk specializes in photographing something that has been photographed before innumerable times, but squeezes out an original vision of it. In "The Chrysler Building: A Reflection", Funk captures the skyscraper as a yellow semi-abstract reflection in the blue glass of New York's Grand Hyatt. In a sense, this is one of his deepest interpretations of the New York icon. For 95 years, it has been a symbol of the greatest city in the world. It's only natural that the viewer can see a fuzzy, vague image of it, yet still recognize it as the Chrysler Building.
Along with the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, and the Brooklyn Bridge, the Chrysler Building is as much of a concept as it is an object. It's the image of New York and is something to reflect on. To drive home that point, Funk elevates the look of the photograph with hyper-lighting. He catches the sun at the perfect moment, with bursting rays that extend into the reflection, imbuing the image with a deeper consciousness. The image is part of a new epic exhibition, "Mitchell Funk Photographs the Chrysler Building for 50 Years".
The work is signed dated and numbered 3/15 lower right recto, with other sizes available, 29 x 43, and it's unframed and printed later. Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper
