An engraving, engraved by Neville, from a painting by Henry Raeburn of John Earl of Hopetoun. Known as John Hope and later Lord Niddry Hopetoun, he was a Scottish politician and army officer. The Hope Diamond seems to have been acquired by a relative, Thomas Hope? This is unclear. This possible connection aside, John Earl of Hopetoun was an important English proponent of Neoclassicism throughout Europe till today.
