Jerry Schatzberg, born in the Bronx, began his career as a fashion photographer with work featured in major magazines like Vogue, Esquire, and LIFE. His intimate portraiture of icons such as Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol revealed his gift for capturing authenticity, a skill that carried into his filmmaking. Schatzberg debuted as a director in 1970 with Puzzle of a Downfall Child and gained acclaim with The Panic in Needle Park and the Cannes-winning Scarecrow. Known for coaxing raw performances from actors and favoring nuanced, human stories over spectacle, he resisted Hollywood trends in favor of emotionally resonant storytelling, earning lasting recognition in Europe and among serious cinephiles. -
