A 19th century lithograph by the Scottish artist David Roberts (1796-1864), depicting a scene from his celebrated journey through Egypt and the Holy Land. Roberts' precise draftsmanship and romantic perspective captured the grandeur of ancient monuments and desert landscapes with a level of detail that fueled the era’s fascination with the exotic East.
Circa 1842-1849, this original period work was produced during the height of 19th century Orientalism, when the land of the pharaohs was being rediscovered by the Western world.
Hand-colored lithograph on aged paper, originally prepared by the master lithographer Louis Haghe from Roberts' onsite sketches. Rooted in the Victorian tradition of topographical art, this piece reflects the 19th century’s deep romanticism and intellectual curiosity regarding the ancient ruins and cultural spirit of Egypt.
