Description
Large antique framed plaster relief model of Alhambra
Spanish, Late 19th Century
Height 67.5cm, width 41cm, depth 6cm
This finely executed plaster relief, dating to the late 1800s, presents an intricate representation of a façade from the Alhambra - an iconic palace and fortress situated in Granada, Spain. Celebrated as one of the most distinguished examples of Islamic architecture, the Alhambra captivated 19th century travellers, particularly those journeying from Britain, continental Europe, and the United States. As tourism to this historic site flourished, detailed architectural replicas such as this became highly fashionable as mementos, offering admirers the opportunity to relive and share their experiences through tangible works of art.
Expertly cast from a mould, the model showcases a richly decorated arched portal. On either side, delicately coloured tile-effect panels have been skilfully fashioned from plaster to emulate the original mosaic dado. Surrounding the arch are finely rendered motifs in epigraphic, geometric, and foliate designs, capturing the essence of Nasrid craftsmanship. The model's multi-layered surface adds notable depth and realism, drawing the eye and evoking a sense of transport to the architectural marvel it portrays.
Set within a glazed wooden frame, this decorative piece also bears a later restorer's stamp on the reverse.
A striking and historically resonant object, this 19th century relief makes an exceptional addition to any decorative arts collection or interior with a passion for Islamic or Moorish design. - More Information
