Description
Created during Peter Alexander's return to sculpture in 2006, this urethane wedge reflects the renewed exploration of light, color, and perception that defined the final chapter of his career. After abandoning polyester resin in the early 1970s due to its toxicity, Alexander spent more than three decades focused primarily on painting before returning to sculptural practice with less-toxic polyurethane. Here, a luminous blue gradient heightens the work's interaction with light, causing the sculpture to shift in color and transparency as viewing angles and ambient conditions change. Alexander described these wedge forms as "objects that disappear at the top," allowing them to merge with their surroundings rather than simply occupy them. At once minimalist and atmospheric, the sculpture transforms ordinary light into a perceptual experience, exemplifying Alexander's enduring contribution to California's Light and Space movement.
