Description
Created during Peter Alexander's pioneering exploration of cast polyester resin in the late 1960s and early 1970s, this Leaner exemplifies the body of work that established him as a leading figure of California's Light and Space movement. Alexander first began experimenting with polyester resin after encountering the industrial material through the Southern California aerospace and boat-building industries, recognizing its remarkable ability to trap and transmit light. Unlike his geometric cubes and wedges, the Leaners introduced a subtle sense of movement and tension, appearing to balance effortlessly while engaging directly with the surrounding architecture. Cast in luminous polyester resin, the sculpture shifts with changing light, revealing subtle variations in color and transparency as the viewer moves around it. The work is secured by a discreet steel base that is anchored to the floor, reinforcing its seemingly precarious stance while allowing the sculpture to maintain its elegant, gravity-defying presence. Both materially innovative and visually ethereal, Alexander's Leaners remain among the most iconic expressions of his lifelong investigation into light, perception, and space.
