Alexander first began experimenting with polyester resin after encountering the industrial material through the Southern California aerospace and boat-building industries, recognizing its remarkable ability to trap and transmit light. Unlike his geometric cubes and wedges, the Leaners introduced a subtle sense of movement and tension, appearing to balance effortlessly while engaging directly with the surrounding architecture. Cast in luminous polyester resin, the sculpture shifts with changing light, revealing subtle variations in color and transparency as the viewer moves around it.
