Description
Rare and large 19th century set of 14 mother of pearl Stations of the Cross
Jerusalem/ French, Late 19th Century
Height 39cm, width 24cm, depth 4.5cm
An outstanding example of devotional art, this rare 14-piece set dates to the late 19th century and illustrates the Stations of the Cross, a sacred Christian tradition that reflects upon Christ’s journey from condemnation to entombment. A unique collaboration of international craftsmanship, the intricately carved mother-of-pearl scenes were produced in Jerusalem, while the ornate marble and gilt bronze framing was crafted in France.
Each panel showcases a finely sculpted mother-of-pearl shell, depicting one of the 14 Stations in high relief. The expressive figures, with finely detailed facial features and dynamic postures, evoke a deep emotional resonance and spiritual reverence. The compositions are further enhanced by intricately incised backgrounds, featuring architectural elements or natural landscapes that set the scene with subtle precision. The scenes are numbered in the bottom right corner.
The central reliefs are mounted on shaped marble plaques, each enclosed within a finely cast gilt bronze (ormolu) frame. Crowning each panel is a gilt cross inset with a wooden cruciform, offering a beautiful interplay of materials and tones. Floral ormolu embellishments adorn each corner, while an upper plaque bears the station number and a lower plaque presents the title in French. At the top of each panel, dual suspension loops have been fitted for easy and elegant wall display.
Rich in religious symbolism and showcasing exceptional artisanal skill, this extraordinary set is both a moving devotional object and a remarkable decorative treasure. -
