Description
Fabulous watercolor of American Legion week in New York. Dock workers reading the newspaper with the Empire State Building in the distance and planes flying in formation overhead. Signed lower left. Titled and dated, 1937 lower right. The actual American Legion parade took place on September 30th in New York City down Fifth Avenue. The condition is very good. It has been newly matted but keeping it original period white wash frame. Overall 24.25 by 31.75 inches
Biography Bertram Hartman
Bertram Hartman was an American painter who was born in Junction City, Kansas on April 18, 1882. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and at the Royal Academy in Munich and Paris. He was a member of the Chicago Society of Artists, National Society of Mural Painters, American Society of Painters, Sculptors and Gravers; and American Water Color Society.
Hartman exhibited at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915, Carnegie Institute in 1933, Art Insitute of Chicago from 1926 to 1934, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, Grand Central Palace and in South America in 1940. -
