Description
For your consideration, we have a pen and ink drawing of an interpretation of The Three Graces, who strike a pose for a 1930s fashion ad. In Greek mythology, they were goddesses who personified beauty, grace, and charm. To the left, as an inset image, we see a crying girl comforted by her grandma. Perhaps Female Illustrator Nell Reppy's assignment was to illustrate a story about a young girl's aspirations to make it big in modeling and become a woman of elegance. The work is masterfully rendered by a woman illustrator who demonstrates high technical ability that is absent from most contemporary art. The disposition of figures is skillfully arranged and her tight composition is designed to support the artwork's narrative.
Board has mildly darkened with age; bottom corners are bumped in margin only. Wear and markings in keeping with illustration and publishing process. Paper is peeling in upper left. Not framed.
Overall: 19.75 x 21.5 inches
Nell Reppy was born around 1904 in Bourlder, Colorado
She was a freelance illustrator and children's book author and illustrator and her work appeared in various publications including Harpers's Bazaar, April 1931
She worked in New York and some of her books include, A Penny for Candy, The Little Builders' ABC, Here am I -
