Description
Set of six antique Chinese pith paper watercolours of birds
Chinese, 19th Century
Height 33cm, width 42.5cm, depth 1.5cm
This captivating set of six Chinese paintings, dating from the 19th century, beautifully showcases traditional craftsmanship on pith paper. Unlike conventional materials, pith paper is minimally absorbent, allowing pigments to rest atop the surface. The result is artwork with striking clarity, rich hues, and vibrant quality.
During the 1800s, these intricate works were popular among European travellers, frequently collected as keepsakes that offered a glimpse into the elegance and symbolism of Chinese art and nature.
Each composition features small groups of birds - ducks, parrots, and other species - either poised delicately on blossoming branches or positioned against natural rock formations. One standout piece portrays a pair of ducks on tranquil waters, creating a serene contrast to the land-based settings of the others.
The paintings are enhanced by finely crafted frames in a deep maroon tone with gold embellishments. Decorative pierced metal mounts accent the corners, while oval bird medallions adorn the centre of each frame side, adding a refined ornamental touch.
A celebration of nature, this antique set is perfect for collectors and enthusiasts of Chinese art and ornithology. Whether displayed in a modern home or a period setting, these paintings bring timeless beauty and cultural depth to any space. - More Information
