Description
A 17th century English oak boarded chest, Charles I, circa 1640
An unusual Carolean chest from the mid-17th century distinctively carved with two waved bands of interlocking trefoils or fleur-de-lys. Unlike joined chests from this period this boarded chest construction has its origins in medieval carpentry techniques with the side panels descending to form tapered cut-away supports (A Similar example from 1500 is illustrated in Victor Chinnery's. Oak Furniture. p. 359). The hinged lid has long moulded edges across the top and there is an iron lockplate to the front. -
