Description
The history of American of Martinsville is one with a rich portfolio of work, ubiquitous in the world of Mid-Century Modern design. The manufacturer’s style varied greatly in an attempt to appeal to new generations of home owners, these are the years of the “furniture set” which populated entire dining rooms and bedrooms with ease. One designer in American of Martinsville’s stable of talent was Merton Gershun, possible their most notable name, who expertly created these handsome nightstands.
Gershun relied on his knowledge of French and Asian design in his work, this is unmistakably evident in the work he produced for American of Martinsville. The common thread throughout his portfolio is his attention to materials, the combinations were always unique and timeless. With the shown pieces from the “Accord Collection” his approach to nightstand design is like no other. Petite tapered legs lift these substantial 2-drawer cases off the ground, exploring the idea of weightlessness which contrasts nicely with the use of solid walnut and aluminum hardware. Gershun’s Accord Collection also sports delicate x-motif aluminum inlays on every piece’s surface and such is true with these nightstands. The aluminum inlay and asymmetrical recessed drawer pulls are all gorgeously patinated from age giving them a warm brass hue which is quite a desirable look paired with walnut.
These nightstands remain in their original finish and are in good condition. Wear exists which is expected with age and history however no major cosmetic or structural issues are evident. -
