Description | BIEDERMEIER MAHOGANY ONE-DRAWER WARDROBE Northern European, circa 1830-50 Item # 906SRW13P A product of Northern Europe, likely Denmark during the second quarter of the 19th century, this attractively petite late Biedermeier wardrobe is crafted of both solid mahogany and mahogany veneers over pine with pine secondary woods. The stacked top is surrounded by a projecting cove-molded crest, the upper with a beautifully shaped faux-drawer over the full length single-door with scalloped border moldings, this opening to reveal a shelved interior, situated over a single hand-dovetailed deep drawer in the lower section. The entire armoire rests on turned bun front feet and squared (replaced) back feet. The backboards remain nearly untouched other than a minor splice repair, these pine planks nearly black with oxidization, the vertical planks chamfered around the edges and set in grooves on the sides. Particularly attractive due to the restrained size, simple profile and clean lines, the surface is rich with an old polished patina in the shellac and dense mahogany woods. For an interior where a fine historical surface is necessary to bring some warmth and authenticity to a room, this is a piece that blends well with both modern and traditional furnishings. Measurements: 63 3/8" H x 16 1/2" D x 28 1/8" W Condition Report: Base molding on right side replaced with loss to backmost edge, smaller veneer loss to back corner base molding left side; old cracks in veneers and solids throughout with some associated filling/surface repair; patches to veneers in a few spots (right side lower back edge, small puddy fill left-side cove molding, ); old lock, no key; strip of edge spliced in on one backboard; back feet replaced. |
