Description
Very fine early 19th century burr oak cabinet, the pediment with three bronze stars over two glazed doors, the lower cabinet with single fitted drawer over two cupboard doors concealing four graduated drawers, standing on ebonized paw feet, the whole with rich and vivid graining.
Note, while at first this cabinet appears to be a Regency example with similarities to pieces by George Bullock, it is probably North American in origin. A close inspection reveals the sides are constructed of white birch, while the secondary timber is clear grained Northern White Pine, both of which are native to the US and Canada. Coupled with the archaic use of gilt lacquered brass swan neck brasses for the interior (something a fashionable English cabinet maker wouldn't use at this date) a convincing argument could be made for this being made in North America. However and regardless, this remains a stylish and honest piece wherever it was made. -
