Description
Four total drawers compose this dignified Empirically-styled mahogany commode. Made in France circa 1880, this awesome case piece is topped in black / charcoal-colored fossil marble that, along with the body, has patinated wonderfully over the decades. A hidden drawer, free of any hardware, resides in the commode’s apron. The mahogany veneer has been thoughtfully bookmatched, creating an even and balanced appearance to the whimsical, oftentimes arbitrary grain found therein. Iconic of the Empire style, two ornate columns flank the bank of drawers, each having decorative brass capitals and bases. Cast brass ornamentation graces the commode’s pulls, incorporating a floral bouquet into their centers. Brass can also be found in the ribbon and oak branch wreath-form escutcheons that surround the keyholes. Don’t let this antique’s highly-ornamented style make you think that it is only fit for formal settings. Adding it to a more casual setting can make for an unexpected surprise. Diverse living spaces do not require the kind of “maintenance” that trendier, fleeting styles do. They make for excellent conversation and dwellings that are utilized to reflect the owner’s individuality and personality.
