French 19th Century Walnut Empire Commode

A substantial French Empire commode from the 19th century made of glowing walnut and proportionately large rosette hardware on the drawers. The commode’s top is an impressive single plank where the full grain can be appreciated for its color and gentle striations, held in place by square peg joinery. The overhanging frieze drawer uses two ring pulls to open mounted on répoussé brass backplates shaped like camelias or roses; there is no keyhole escutcheon, instead the bookmatched veneer animates the center by a feathered appearance. Two (detached) columns finished with brass capitals & bases flank the lower drawers using the same type of ring pulls and matching escutcheons over the keyhole. No key is present. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, this gorgeous antique storage piece is ready for its next home.
