Description
AN EXCEPTIONAL RESTAURATION GILT BRONZE MOUNTED COMMODE À VANTAUX
(attributeable to Jacob Frères rue Meslee)
Flame mahogany and mahogany over oak, the rectangular white marble top above a frieze drawer with finely incised gilt bronze mounts flanked by scrolling foliage and anthemion, the lower part of the central ring enclosing the rosette lifts to form the handle for the drawer, above a pair of doors decorated with raised crossed mahogany cornucopiae terminating in fine quality gilt bronze baskets of flowers and fruit. The doors open to reveal three mahogany lined slides 'à l'Anglaise". Resting on a rectangular plinth and block feet. Original lock and key. Stamped under the marble with Stencilled ink mark 'LESAGE" rue Grange Balatière No 2 à Paris in an oval. France circa 1820.
(Antoine Nicolas Lesage (1784-1841) was an important merchant not a manufacturer as was noted by Veytard, inspector of the Garde Royal in 1823. Based in Paris his shop was known for the quality of the furniture and decorative arts amongst his clients were the Duchesse de Berry who bought for the Chateau de Rosnay and the Royal household. It is also known that Thomas Hope the English designer was a client.
Amongst official commissions between 1822-1834: The Garde-meuble de la Couronne, the Palais Royal, & the Chateau de Meudon
An almost identical piece was sold by Christies on 9th July 2009 and in 10th July 2008 a very similar piece sold. In 1981 a cabinet with matching secrètaire was sold by Tajan in Paris.
