Description
Large Second Empire gilt bronze and marquetry display cabinet
French, late 19th Century
Height 271cm, width 235cm, depth 52cm
This magnificent display cabinet exemplifies the very best of the Second Empire style. The cabinet is adorned with gilt bronze mounts and marquetry panels, all crafted at an exceptional level. The large cabinet features five bays: the large central bay is set with a door, as are the two smaller flanking side bays. Each of the bays is glazed with a shaped glass panel set within a gilt bronze frame moulded with foliate patterns. Below each of the windows is a gilt bronze framed floral marquetry panel. The entablature of the cabinet is undulating in form and is set with gilt bronze borders and is centred with a large and impressive gilt bronze rocaille. The aprons of the cabinet are similarly formed. The cabinet is set atop cabriole legs, while the velvet lined interior features two glass shelves. -
