Jonestown, Dauphin (now Lebanon County), Pennsylvania.
Probably by Peter Ranck, Circa 1800.
Primary Wood: Pine
Reference: See the painted dower chest with very similar decoration in Monroe H. Fabian The Pennsylvania-German Decorated Chest, plate 242. See also the chest in Paint, Pattern & People: Furniture of Southeastern Pennsylvania 1725-1850 by Wendy Cooper and Lisa Minardi, figure 2.49, page 91, as well as the discussion of the Ranck brothers on pages 89-92. Winterthur Museum has the account book of Peter Ranck, but, to date, no signed examples of his chests are known. -
