Applied exterior pilasters are very rarely found. Other desks and secretaries that have them include a block front desk in The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Richard H. Randall, Jr., American Furniture in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, number 58), the Josiah Quincy Secretary at Winterthur (N. Richards and N. Evans, New England Furniture at Winterthur, number 206, pages 435 – 438, and Joseph Downs, American Furniture, number 226), and a desk owned by Israel Sack, Inc. (Israel Sack Brochure IX, May 1962 American Art from the Israel Sack Collection, Volume 1, page 198).
Also very rare are the “bombe” shaped feet. Other pieces with the same shaped feet include a block front chest of drawers at Bayou Bend (Warren, Brown, Coleman, and Neff, American Decorative Arts and Paintings in the Bayou Bend Collection, Number F134, pages 83 – 84), a block front kneehole desk shown in a John Walton advertisement, Antiques May 1972, and a block front chest on chest illustrated in Wallace Nutting, The Furniture Treasury, Volume I, number 312.
This piece is illustrated in Bernard & S. Dean Levy, Inc. Catalogue XII – May 2002, page 7.
