Lacquer and gilt bronze cabinet in the Japonisme style by Rosel
Belgian, late 19th Century
Height 185cm, width 94cm, depth 43cm
The cabinet is wrought from veneered wood and is decorated with gilt mounts and Japanese style lacquered panels. The lower section of the cabinet features a door decorated with a large gilt bronze framed lacquer panel, while the edges of the cabinet feature gilt bronze mounts. The upper part of the cabinet features a frieze drawer below a section featuring two drawers, two cabinet doors, and three satin lined cubbyholes. The upper section is further decorated with lacquer panels and gilt bronze mounts. The cabinet is topped by a crown inset with a clock and mounted with twin scrolling lights.
The clock dial is signed ‘Rosel’, an interior plaque is signed ‘Rosel / Fabricant / Bruxelles’, and the back is stamped with ‘Rosel’. Rosel was a Brussels based furniture maker renowned for its Japonisme and Chinoiserie style pieces, which won numerous awards, including at the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1893.
