Shiro Kuramata, Nikko Cabinet for Memphis, 1982

  • Description
Shiro Kuramata (1934 – 1991) is one of Japan’s most important designers of the 20th century. Kuramata was mainly known for his use of industrial materials such as wire steel mesh and lucite to create architectural interiors and furniture. His revolutionary pieces reflect the emerging dynamism and maturing creativity of postwar Japan, often a fusion between oriental and occidental cultures.

This highly lacquered, playful Nikko Cabinet,(1982) is an excellent example of Ettore Sottsass’s influence on Kuramata. In 1981 Kuramata joined Sottsass’s design group “Memphis”.
