Sold Sold
  • Description
The Paxton House Secretaire, circa 1775

A George III mahogany secretaire in two parts, the upper case with vividly grained doors concealing 24 pigeonholes over four drawers, the lower section with pullout secretary drawer with interior comprising ten additional pigeon holes over six drawers and central prospect door, the lower section with three linen drawers retaining original marbled paper linings and standing on distinctive bracket feet, the whole possessing good rich color and patination.

A recent re-discovery, this provenanced secretary cabinet by Thomas Chippendale was commissioned by Ninian Home for his Berwickshire residence, Paxton House. Paxton was one of Chippendale’s largest commissions, with over 100 recorded items supplied by the Chippendale firm between 1770 and 1791.

Much of Chippendale’s Paxton furniture was constructed of the finest Jamaican mahogany and that, along with the high quality of construction and restrained design exemplify what has come to be called Paxton Style, which Chippendale described as “neat and substantially good.”
