Description
ASTRONAUTS is a creative studio specialising in limited edition objects; founded by Danae Dasyra & Joe Bradford.
For ASTRONAUTS, making is central — materials or processes dictate, and design is merely a response.
The artists subvert conventional industrial manufacturing techniques as they self-fabricate their work in-house at their Athens-based workshop. Enabled by proximity to the objects’ evolution, they work sculpturally, thus reaching their distinctive aesthetic.
Reflecting on the experience of encounter, the duo aims to create a moment of surprise — inviting one to find strange beauty in the atypical, imagine narratives of the pieces’ origins and function. Ultimately, they challenge imposed perceptions of aesthetics and objects in search for freedom.
Danae Dasyra & Joe Bradford explore the relationship between pressure and metal, with the pieces becoming studies of what can happen when various containers are exerted to extreme forces.
Hydroforming is an industrial process where hydraulic fluid is used to shape ductile metals.
The duo focuses on the shell hydro-bulging technique, inflating sealed TIG-welded vessels using a water pump. The designers utilise the changes in geometry prior and after inflation to create multi-part compositions.
