Description
Clear and purple cut-glass chandelier in the Belle Époque style
Continental, 20th Century
Height 74cm, diameter 76cm
This opulent chandelier is crafted in the lavish Belle Époque style, which dominated French design at the turn of the 20th century. The chandelier consists of a central purple glass stem which is carved in a fluted design, which terminates in a clear glass bottom bowl with geometric patterning.
From the bottom bowl extend twelve branches that are arranged in two tiers, which are carved from clear glass in a rope design. Each branch terminates in an elegant floral candle cup carved from purple cut glass, from which hangs a ring of speared pendants in various shades of purple. Inside the candle cup sits the light fixture, encased in a foliate-engraved glass hurricane shade with a waved rim.
An additional ornamental tier extends from the top canopy, with downward curving arms cut in a similar rope style. Each arm terminates in a cascading series of purple glass pendants shaped like upturned flowers, centred by a single speared pendant. A similar cascading finial hangs from the bottom bowl.
Brimming with luxury, this chandelier is marked by its unusual deep purple glass, making it certain to add a special touch to any home. -
