Description
Pair of antique French marble, ormolu and marquetry pedestals
French, Late 19th Century
Height 142cm, width 44cm, depth 44cm
This elegant pair of pedestals is a stunning example of the vibrant Louis XV style, which emerged in the mid-18th century. Known for its rounded shapes, graceful flowing lines, and motifs inspired by nature, this style is beautifully embodied in this exquisite duo.
Topping each bombe-shaped pedestal is a striking slab of Breccia Medicea marble, notable for its creamy base accented with rich pink-red veins. The marble surfaces transition smoothly into reeded ormolu friezes below, each side featuring a prominent gilded mount that enhances the overall opulence. The curved pedestal bodies are adorned with intricately inlaid marquetry panels, crafted from a selection of fine woods to depict delicate floral designs. These panels are elegantly framed by gleaming ormolu mounts, which highlight their intricate detailing.
Adding further richness, each corner is embellished with three-dimensional ormolu busts - two portray women wearing elaborate feathered headdresses, while the other two depict men with feathered hats. These sculptural accents are complemented by ornate scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and floral embellishments, creating a harmonious decorative scheme.
The pedestals rest on scrolled feet shaped like acanthus leaves, which seamlessly rise to meet the ormolu edging, guiding the eye upward toward the intricately decorated main body.
The ormolu carries a spurious signature mark, ‘B Molitor’.
Impressively crafted with attention to detail, this pair of pedestals offers a luxurious and timeless platform for showcasing fine decorative items, marrying grandeur with refined elegance. -
