Glass and Gilt-Wood Wall Lights by Broman, Europe Early 20th Century

$ 2,137
  • Description
    Standing as evidence of the inventiveness and timeless glamour of Art Nouveau is this pair of ornamented wall lights. These lights were designed to show off the dynamic elegance that symbolized the era’s rich cultural scene in Europe and even today, they exude the same impression to the contemporary eye.

    Creative and decorative arts appeared in a form that featured a new strong but flowing style that was influenced by natural forms such as plants, flowers, and trees. In this aspect, Art Nouveau was quite organic in style. Influenced by a whole range of decorative arts, including architecture, painting, graphic art, textiles, ceramics, and glass art, the style’s rich visual dimension is clearly traceable in these lamps. With a classic period look, these models feature gilded wood bodies with floral and sculptural forms. Apart from the top, they are symmetrical, however, upon closer observation there are small differences that show the handcrafted parts that make each lamp completely unique. The gilded wood has three panels in the front that are painted green, drawing the attention to the middle. The bodies are richly decorated, and the glass shades are no exception with floral patterns that get outlined beautifully when the lamps are lit. The alluring sense of artistic whimsy of these sculptural pieces is unparalleled. Each piece is meticulously crafted to showcase the very best of the design style. The lamps are marked “Broman”, presumably the manufacturer’s mark.

    The wonderful period of Art Nouveau was relatively short-lived. It ran in conjunction with the latter period of the Arts and Crafts movement and was ended by the emergence of the completely opposing style of the Art Deco period which replaced Art Nouveau as the dominant decorative style. These impressive fixtures are thus rare reminders of the style and are sure to make great focal points for contemporary homes to add plenty of personality to any space.
