Description
An organic and lively pair of pendant lamps, probably designed by Paavo Tynell and manufactured by Idman with the model no. K 3-3. The pandants feature an elongated white opaline glass shades wrapped in two different rattan types. The composition feels light and airy, with a distinctly summery, natural and organic character that evokes a subtle Mediterranean and rustic sensibility — warm, relaxed, and effortlessly inviting.
The lamps are relatively compact in diameter and can easily be fitted in different interiors. They would fit perfectly over a dinning table or kitchen counter for example. The design works particularly well in organic, coastal, and modern eclectic settings, where its natural materials and gentle glow can truly shine. The hanging height can be easily adjusted by altering the length of the electrical cord, allowing for flexible placement according to the height of the room.
The lamps are found in the 1950s Idman catalogue under model number K3-3 which makes it hard to know if it was one of Tynell's designs. Regardless of the designer, the lamps are beauties with a natural and calming aesthetic appeal.
Paavo Tynell, often referred to as the man who illuminated Finland, began his career as a sheet metal craftsman before co-founding Taito Oy in 1918. While some of his postwar designs were initially met with hesitation in Finland, they were enthusiastically embraced in the United States, where his refined use of brass and organic forms resonated strongly. Today, Tynell’s most important works are highly sought after and command significant prices at international auctions, with examples held in major institutions including the Finnish Parliament House. His work continues to stand as a benchmark of Scandinavian lighting design, balancing craftsmanship, warmth, and quiet elegance. - More Information
