Description
PAIR OF LACQUERED BRONZE 5-LIGHT FIGURAL CANDELABRA FEATURING THE MUSICIAN AND THE POET
After Jean-Jacques Feuchére and Eugene de Labroue | each signed on the base "J Feuchére Scpt" and "E de Labroue sct" | ca. late 19th/early 20th century
Item # 308PKI13Q An incredibly powerful pair of five-light candelabra depicting "The Poet" and "The Musician" after the Romantic figural sculptures by Jean-Jacques Feuchére and Eugene de Labroue respectively, both feature a crown of laurel-leaves and are depicted in traditional Greco-Roman garments. The poet is chaste with her body entirely covered while the musician's toga has fallen off of her shoulders to leave her partially exposed. Rising behind each figure is a complex array of flowers springing from a central turned brass stem; most are fully developed flowers with anthers springing forth from within the pedals. Within five flowers in each candelabra are contained a simple candle well to nestle candlesticks naturalistically within the collection and in the center a turned brass rod rises containing the electrified cord and the light bulb. The brass harp affixes on either side of the light bulb in the typical manner. An incredibly beautiful pair.
We have left the lacquered surface exactly as-found with the flaws and craquelure unrestored - however, this can be restored in our workshop upon request for a more perfect presentation.
Measurements: 42" H x approximately 15" W/D, base 4 3/8" W Condition Report:
Early tinted lacquer surface with craquelure and chipping loss revealing the underlying patinated bronze; tarnish and discoloration in crevices throughout; carefully cleaned and polished where applicable; electric tested and fully functioning; musician is missing her flute and poet is missing her quill; a fine presentation. -
