Description
The manufacturer Søholm Stentøj (“Søholm Stoneware”) was one of the oldest and most revered names in Danish ceramics. It was founded in Rønne, on the Baltic island of Bornholm, in 1835 and became known for its distinctive ceramic designs, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics. In the middle of the 20th century, Søholm produced a wide range of stoneware in various patterns and shapes, marrying practicality with artistry to create items that feel both grounded and elegant.
This glazed ceramic table lamp exemplifies the Danish mid-modern balance between form and function, by combining a timeless silhouette with elegant and unique details. The body of the lamp takes inspiration from the classic teardrop shape to create contrast between the tapered top half and rounded bottom. This design choice allows enough space on the lower half of the lamp for the addition of a textured geometrical blue pattern, showcasing the main visual element of the piece, with the pattern contrasting against the vintage look of the off-white glaze. The lamp features a pleated shade that softens the light, creating a warm, ambient glow, while adding another layer of visual interest and originality. No aspect of this piece was overlooked in the design process, with the quality craftsmanship being rooted in the rich history of the lamp, as well as in its unique characteristics.
With its refined form and aesthetic, this Søholm Stentøj table lamp is more than a source of light—it’s a statement piece that reflects 1960s Danish design principles of the mid-century period. Its organic feel and modern influences allow it to blend seamlessly into contemporary settings, while still embodying the unique heritage of mid-century European artistry.
