Swedish Grace Floor Lamp with Decorative Antelopes on the Base, Sweden 1930s

$ 4,180
  • Description
    Prior to Sweden’s more famous and minimalist post-war designs, the Swedish Grace movement developed in parallel with the renowned Art Deco. It was a brief yet impactful chapter of modern design history and can be considered the Nordic branch of the Art Deco style.

    The designers of this era sought to preserve historic styles while introducing a new and innovative creative expression, as observed in this floor lamp’s curved form. The lamp’s material choice give the piece a subtle warmth and sophistication, creating a timeless aesthetic that blends understated luxury with functional craftsmanship. The combination of the brass body, rattan shade, and metal base greatly adds to the visual interest. As well as being aesthetically pleasing, this floor lamp is durable, due to the use of brass. Not only is the brass durable but it develops a beautiful patina over time. The most captivating element of this model is the circular base with relief decorations of antelopes. The term relief is from the Latin verb relevare, to raise— to create something in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. This design element truly elevated what could have been a simple and functional part of the lamp into a beautiful focal point. The adjustable rattan empire lampshade creates a cosy effect when the lamp is lit, as the light peeks through the woven gaps. The Swedish Grace movement seamlessly blended the decorative expressiveness of Art Deco and Neoclassicism with the characteristic Scandinavian restraint (or minimalism, as it would be coined in the early 20th century). This lamp has a traditional yet playful eclectic feel to it, making it exemplary of this period and a lovely addition to any interior.

    This floor lamp is the perfect way to add a touch of elegance to any space without being overwhelming. Its expert craftsmanship and unique character showcase the beauty of the pieces produced during the Swedish Grace period.
