  • Description
A Regency oval wall mirror cum light reflector with decorative scalloped design
    English. Early Nineteenth Century.
    Measurements
    Height: 24" (61 cm); Width 28" (71 cm); Depth 3 1/2" (8 cm).
    Research:
Of gilded wood. The molded oval frame set with repeating ball ornament and decorated to the top, bottom and sides with sprigs of oak. The inner tongue and dart slip enclosing the original mirror plate decorated with concentric scalloped thumbprint pattern.

The present piece is a rare example of the nineteenth century development in lighting in which a textured treatment of the glass panels served as reflectors. Pounced, corrugated or pressed glass, created a dynamic surface that was employed to amplify and/or decoratively disperse the light of a room. In this case a complex technique of cutting and grinding the glass was employed, to beautiful effect.

Full research report available on request.
