Provenance:
Blairman, Mount Street, London
An important American collection
Mirrors, and other reflective surfaces, have consistently been associated with magic throughout time, “long regarded as a passageway to other worlds.” One significant use is in the divinatory practice of scrying, which involves gazing into a medium, such as a mirror, to gain insight, seek visions, or receive messages. The nineteenth century fascination with and revival of magic by Victorian occultists, as well as curious men and women “dabbling in esoteric interests during the period” brought together science and sorcery, spirituality and mysticism. Such mirrors as the present piece, taking the form of a witch, were said to have been produced in Britain in the nineteenth century in places such as Belfast, Wales and Cornwall.
