    A BAROQUE ACANTHUS GILTWOOD MIRROR CARVED WITH UNUSUAL SERPENT AND GROTESQUE MOTIFS AND SURMOUNTED BY A DISPLAYED EAGLE
    Possibly Florence. Probably Early Eighteenth Century.
    Measurements
    Height: 57 1/2" (131 cm); Width: 36 3/4 (93 cm).

    Research
    Of limewood (?). The old but later rectangular mercury silvered beveled mirror plate within a stylized lotus carved molding. The crest surmounted by a displayed eagle with a bulbous blossoming flower. The frame composed of a system of boldly carved acanthus leaves with two entwined serpents/ The lower part centered by a grotesque male mask with distorted mouth holding tendrils. Note: The molded section containing the mirror with old evidence of small height reduction. Possibly originally a frame for a painting. The gilding is probably 19th century. Minor old repairs and forged iron strengthening to reverse.
