Description
Antique rectangular Venetian hanging wall mirror, made in Italy during the 19th century according to the traditional Murano glassmaking techniques for which Venetian mirrors are renowned. The mirror is composed of multiple hand-cut glass elements assembled over a wooden backing frame, a method characteristic of authentic period Venetian production, where both the reflective plate and the surrounding borders were individually worked and then mounted to a solid support.
The border panels are finely hand-engraved with delicate floral and foliate motifs, executed with precision and symmetry, showing the refined workmanship associated with Murano artisans. The engraved decoration extends along all ground elements of the frame, creating a continuous ornamental pattern that enhances the brilliance of the glass and gives the mirror a light, elegant appearance. The subtle etched detailing catches the light from different angles, producing the soft luminous effect typical of high-quality Venetian mirrors of the 19th century. The glass elements are mounted on a wooden frame with a natural finish, providing structural stability while remaining discreet so that the engraved glass decoration remains the dominant visual feature. The proportions and construction are consistent with mirrors produced in Venice during the 1800s, when finely engraved examples such as this were made for both domestic interiors and formal reception rooms.
Because of its classic rectangular form and refined decoration, this mirror is a very versatile piece that can be placed in an entry hall, living room, bedroom, or above a console or mantel, and it blends easily with both antique and contemporary interiors. The mirror measures approximately 65 inches high, 34 inches wide, and 1.5 inches deep, giving it an impressive scale while remaining suitable for wall hanging. Overall in good antique condition, with wear consistent with age and use. -
