CIRCA 1870 LOUIS XVI STYLE GILT MIRROR

$ 8,800
  • Description
    Elegant in both scale and execution, this exceptional French Louis XVI style giltwood mirror, crafted during the Napoleon III period circa 1870, embodies the refined neoclassical taste that defined the finest Parisian ateliers of the late nineteenth century. Standing an impressive 83 inches tall, its graceful proportions allow it to function equally well as a commanding floor mirror or as a magnificent overmantel, bringing light and architectural presence to any interior.
    The frame is crowned by an exquisitely carved ribbon cartouche, its flowing loops cascading naturally across finely sculpted laurel branches and tied floral garlands—a hallmark of the Louis XVI decorative vocabulary. The crisp carving displays remarkable depth, while the corners are enriched with carved pendant husks, creating a harmonious balance between ornament and restraint.
    Particularly captivating is the beautifully aged water-gilded surface. Over more than 150 years, gentle polishing and careful stewardship have softened the brilliance of the gilding, revealing subtle glimpses of the warm red bole beneath on the raised bead molding and other naturally worn high points. This authentic wear cannot be replicated; it is the quiet signature of generations of preservation, lending the mirror extraordinary depth, warmth, and character. The mellow patina highlights every carved detail, giving the frame a richness that only time can bestow.
    The finely molded beaded inner border creates an elegant transition to the mirror plate while reinforcing the refined symmetry of the design. Every element—from the ribbon crest to the delicately carved foliage—demonstrates the superior craftsmanship associated with the finest decorative arts of the Napoleon III period.
