Description
Four antique French girandoles in the Rococo-style
French, 19th Century
Height 75cm, width 35cm, depth 10cm
This set of four girandoles recalls the eccentric design style of the late-18th century Rococo period. Each of the four mirrors has unique features, making them a fantastic collector’s item. The curved pieces of glass are elegantly framed in giltwood, and it is through these frames that the superb design shines through.
The girandoles feature the delicate foliate motifs that marked the Rococo period, framing the mirror in a series of swirling patterns. At the base of the glass, Doric-style columns extend upwards asymmetrically, with one side featuring only one column and the other featuring three stacked together. The columns are joined by a fence-like pattern that covers the bottom quartile of the mirror, which again is asymmetrical in its design.
The base of each mirror includes curved acanthus leaf-style support, which is mirrored by a bouquet finial at the top. Two candle sconces protrude from the outer corners of each girandole, also featuring exceptional foliate carving. From these, the wood has been expertly carved to resemble dripping wax, pointing to the overall function of the girandoles.
Each mirror is backed onto an 1817 news clipping.
With their exceptional and unique design, these fantastic Rococo pieces would be a great addition to the appropriate interior. -
