French 19th Century Silver & Gold Gilt Oval Mirror
-
Description
A regal gold and silver gilt mirror with intricate, carved details at the top and bottom. A splendid set of Ho ho birds top scrolling acanthus leaves on the crown of an elegant oval frame that terminates in a snake emerging from acanthus supports. The Ho ho bird is derived from the mythical Asian version of the phoenix and appears in 19th century decorative arts as a symbol of good luck and good fortune; specifically longevity, fidelity, and wisdom. The decorative elements on this piece give a little lift to its otherwise understated classic design. The original mercury glass is beveled which accentuates the beauty of its oval shape and is still brilliant with just the slightest bit of foxing. The gilt is in excellent antique condition with a gorgeous metallic luster. Be sure to see all the detailed images to get a closer look.
