French Baroque Period Carved Giltwood Mirror Frame With Original Mercury Plate
-
Description
An exuberant mid-18th century French Baroque giltwood mirror with an elaborately carved frame of scrolling acanthus, floral and ribbon motifs, and pierced detailing; the mirror’s bold crest with C-scrolls, acanthus, and foliate motifs — typical of the grandeur and drama inherent in the period’s decorative style. The corners are further embellished with intricate floral & ribbon carvings. The original mercury glass is set within the frame, featuring marginal plates that border the larger central mirror. The characteristically mottled surface of the plate adds a rich sense of history to this mirror.
