Description
George II giltwood trumeau looking glass overmantel carved in a restrained rococo manner, the crest with pierced shell and the frame carved with foliate and rocaille decoration with original oil painting of a harbor scene in the top half of the mirror and three mirrored panels to the bottom half. Provenance: the bottom of this piece is identical to a trumeau from Clyne Castle in South Wales shown by Biggs of Maidenhead at the Grosvenor House Fair in 1962. That trumeau was sold in 1952 through Astley Samuel, Leeder and Son, where Biggs is thought to have purchased it. The owner of Clyne, Algernon Walker-Heage-Vivian is thought to have acquired the Biggs trumeau from his antecedent, John Henry Vivian, who would have brought it from Singleton Abbey in Swansea, Wales. The painting is after either Claude-Joseph Vernet or Charles-Francois Lacroix de Marseille. England, circa 1740.
